RMS Weekly Review 1-3

RMS Weekly Review
Volume 1 Issue 3
November 4, 2011

Last Saturday, Christina Adkins, Pat Milotz, and myself attended the Project Learning Tree (PLT) GreenSchools! workshop at the Detroit Edison Public School Academy in downtown Detroit.  Last year, Riverside was recognized as a Green School by Wayne County, Michigan Green Schools. As a Green School, we were invited to this workshop with the opportunity to apply for a $1000 grant to implement a PLT GreenSchools! project.  Also by attending this workshop, we were given a free VendingMiser to give to the cafeteria for their vending machine. “VendingMiser reduces energy consumption an average of 46% - typically $150 per machine”, EnergyStar reports.  We also received a wattage meter for the school and the opportunity to borrow equipment to do studies on our school’s overall “Green” performance.  The Riverside Green Team is looking at two possible projects:
A Solar Pavilion
and/or a Wind Turbine.
Both of which would be beneficial to our school and would fit within the 7th and 8th grade curriculum.  Stay tuned for more information.

MEAPs were boxed up, picked up, and shipped on Monday. Now we wait for the results.

What could be more entertaining than having Halloween, on a school day, at a middle school? Need I say anything more?  The fifth grade Halloween Extravaganza, sponsored by WEB, was a success.  We had the a flash from the past, the Lovely Mrs. Davison, return to read her favorite scary story to the students.  All in all, it was a great time had by all.

Tuesday started the Fuel Up to Play 60 “Walking with the Principal” program,  an initiative sponsored by the Riverside Cafeteria Staff.  Students are given passes to show up before school and do laps with me from 7:30 to 8:00 AM.  On Tuesday, forty-three students and two staff members joined in and walked 1.28 miles. Thursday, we had over 105 students and 4 staff members walking the hall completing 1.62 miles.  We are looking at creating a goal of “Walking to Mackinac”; how many days it takes to walk from Riverside to the bridge.  We have a map posted on the office door where we will marking our weekly progress.  The goal is to continue this throughout the year and challenge other middle schools participating in the Fuel Up to Play 60.
