RMS Weekly Review

Volume 1 Issue 10
January 20, 2012

Here is to hoping everyone had a splendid week.  Warm up your snow blowers, I hear the snow is coming.

This week at RMS was another great week of developing young minds and enriching their souls.

Monday was Dr. Martin Luther King Day.  We started our day off with a really great poem written by one of our 5th graders from Mrs. McMaster’s class.

He had a dream,
As crazy as it may seem,
He didn’t like the stuff that he heard.
Some people fought,
That’s not right he thought,
So he fought back with his words.
After all this,
I beg you not to forget,
All the things,
About Martin Luther King.

Peace message:
Treat people the same,
So his ideas won’t go to shame
-         A. E. Peace Patrol 5th Grade

Throughout all of our classes, students participated in many different activities to honor Dr. King.

Last night, we held our second Parent-Teacher conferences.  Despite the cold weather, staff are reporting good numbers for this session.  I will have a definite number for next week.  Staff also reported on how pleased our parents are with Riverside.  We all received many “Thank Yous” and “Keep up the good work” statements.  This all helps reinforce that internal pride we feel here at Riverside.  It motivates you to get up in the morning and get right back here again to continue on with our mission.

Our WEB leaders finished off their Penny Wars this week.   They are taking the money home to count over the weekend.  All monies raised during our Penny Wars will be donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International. Awareness fliers and informational bookmarks about Juvenile Diabetes were passed out to all students throughout the week.

Lastly, all of our students were given the S.R.I. (Scholastic Reading Inventory) reading test this week.  This is a national reading assessment that tests if a student is reading at their grade level.

SCHOLASTIC READING INVENTORY™ (SRI)

is a research-based, computer-adaptive reading assessment program for students in Grades K–12 that measures reading comprehension on the Lexile Framework® for Reading. The most powerful feature of the SRI is its ability to administer fast and reliable low-stakes assessment to inform instruction and make accurate placement recommendations. Aligned to state tests, SRI helps educators forecast student achievement to those important goals.”

Based off our data, in all four grades, over 56% of our students are reading at or above grade level.  This is incredible data.  I have shared this data with our ELA teachers so they may develop strategies to work with our struggling readers.  Our goal is to test our students quarterly and to chart the student’s growth.

Scott Janack will be hosting Hoops for Heart during lunches next week.  Students will be going into the gym during lunches to shoot baskets and raise money for the American Heart Association.

“Teachers will Teach
Students will Learn
The Data will prove that what we are doing is Right.”
